The University Hospital Center (CHU) of Toulouse, which comprises several health care centers, has become, at the heart of a rapidly expanding urban area, the fourth largest hospital in France in terms of activities and the reference center for the healthcare sector in the region. Its long history began in the Middle Ages and continues to this day.

The Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques is the oldest of our hospitals. Serving as the administrative headquarters of the University Hospital Center of Toulouse, it is an architectural complex built on the banks of the Garonne River, over several centuries. It originated from the merging of the Sainte-Marie de la Daurade Hospital and the Novel Hospital in the 12th and 13th centuries, both of which were later combined under the name of "Hôpital Saint-Jacques du bout-du-Pont" in the 14th century. Its purpose was to welcome the poor, the sick, and pilgrims on their way to Saint-Jacques of Compostela.

After centuries dedicated to healthcare, the Hôtel-Dieu saw its last hospitalization services transferred to other establishments in the city in 1987.

When UNESCO inscribed the Pilgrim's Way to Saint-Jacques of Compostela on the World Heritage List in 1998, UNESCO chose the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques to illustrate the extent, variety, and vitality of this heritage.

The Hôtel-Dieu houses four exceptional Heritage Rooms (the Pilgrims' Room, the Column Room, the Chapel, and the 1960s Operating Theater), as well as the Museum the History of Medicine and the Museum of Medical Instruments.

The Pilgrims' Room, with its 19th-century wood panelling, has two major attractions: a wooden statue of Saint-Jacques, reminding of the pilgrimage to Compostela, and portraits of benefactors of the Hospices, notables from Toulouse who, through their material or financial generosity, enabled the hospital to function for centuries. The painting of the Duchess of Angoulême is the most imposing; besides its artistic quality, it shows the Sisters of Charity at work in a common room in the background.

The Column Room owns its name to the old ship masts that were placed here in the second half of the 19th century to reinforce the floor of the common room that then existed on the upper floor. Firmin Pons is the most recent portrait we have; this man donated the lands (legacies) that allowed the CHU to construct the buildings of Purpan-bas. The Aubusson tapestry you see here evokes the pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques of Compostela.

The Chapel dates from the 19th century. The original (medieval) chapel exists only in the foundations visible at the level of the Hôtel-Dieu bicycle garage, more precisely under the choir on the left side. The centerpiece of this chapel is the stained glass window by Louis Victor Gesta, dated 1869, which depicts, from left to right: Saint Vincent de Paul caring for abandoned children / Saint Jacques / Saint Vincent de Paul caring for a sick person.

The pillar of the Bridge seen through from the large glass window is the remains of the oldest bridge in Toulouse: the Pont Couvert de la Daurade, built in the 11th century. It was marked by the whims of the Garonne River, which finally swept it away in the 17th century. The opening of the Pont Neuf in 1632 no longer justified its maintenance or repair.

The Operating Theater equipped the orthopedics department of the Hôtel-Dieu, the last department to leave the establishment in 1987. It was built in and was used until 1975

Together with its neighbor, Hôpital Saint-Joseph de La Grave, the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques is the "place of memory" of the public hospital and one of the most prestigious historical heritage sites in Toulouse.
